5/8/13

Today I began seriously working on the project, installing programs I need to work with, editing some photos in photoshop, taking a lot of pictures and assembling them together in an after effects composition, filming more video, and playing around with 3d layers inside after effects. I just started working on this clip of falling paper hearts but because the camera can only film up to 60fps (which it doesn't even do well) I filmed some crumpled paper hearts on a string spinning in front of a black background, which will basically act as a greenscreen. Then, in after effects, I keyed out the black, looped the heart spinning around once, made it digitally spin around a different axis, multiplied it so there are more than one hearts spinning, scaled them and placed them at different points in z-space (and at different points in the spin cycle so they don't all look the same), and then made an artificial 3d camera to simulate depth of field (i.e focus), a detail that really sells the effect. Now today to finish up that shot I want to add in different hearts, perfect the animation, and figure out how I am going to smoothly incorporate that into the video. Thats not the only thing i've been working on though. Yesterday I also started animation on 2 other things: compiling a montage of old school papers and notes (which I will later do a hand drawn animation on top of), and a montage of different views of a photo of the band that I converted into a higher quality cmky image and applied a halftone effect to so it looks like an old advertisement.

The Original Footage (Heart spinning on string)
Keyframed a mask around the heart to remove the string and everything outside the black background
 Removed the black
Looped and multiplied the hearts and then moved them around in 3d z-space. The line through the heart on the left is its animation path
3d camera and added depth of field

I have never really had any time restrictions on any photo or video projects I have done in the past, so managing my time and making sure I finish this will definitely be my biggest challenges. So far though, I have been 100% motivated and on task– yesterday I probably worked 8 or so hours and I would have kept working had I not had to go home.

  1. i really like this idea of adding homemade animation, images, and textures! these kinds of elements will add a lot to the film and tone. doing extra visuals can take a lot of time, so-as you plan to- make this stuff at home while you aren't filming or editing.
